Worth knowing when you read the next one of these: of the top-ranking "best Splitwise alternatives" articles we checked, most turned out to be published by one of the apps in their own list, ranked first, with no disclosure.
If you want the two-line answer: Tricount is the best free choice for most groups, because it's genuinely free and runs on everything. TallyTrip is better if your group is all on iPhone and you care about your data staying in your own iCloud.
Splitwise is still the best-known app in this category, and for years it was simply the answer. What changed is the free tier: it now limits how many expenses you can add per day and shows full-screen ads between actions, and the features people most want on a trip — receipt scanning, currency conversion, spending charts — sit behind Pro at roughly $2.99–$4.99 a month or $29.99–$39.99 a year depending on plan and region. It is sold per individual, though there is a two-person Duo plan and an annual subscription includes a 30-day Trip Pass covering a group — so a holiday need not mean one subscription per head, but it does mean somebody pays a recurring bill to split dinner.
The result is visible in its rating: Splitwise sits at about 4.0 out of 5 across roughly 27,000 App Store ratings, while most of the smaller apps below sit between 4.6 and 4.9. That gap is almost entirely about the paywall, not about the software, which remains good.

Tricount removed its paid tier entirely and is now completely free, including exports. It's owned by the European bank bunq, which funds it as a way to introduce people to the bank — an unusual arrangement, but the practical result is a mature, well-rated app with nothing behind a paywall.
Worth knowing: it's a bank-owned product, so your data sits on their servers under their terms. If that's the thing you're trying to avoid, look further down.
Splid does the core job free and sells a small one-off unlock rather than a subscription — the model most people in this category say they want. Excellent ratings, clean app, no recurring bill.
Settle Up's group passes are the smartest pricing idea in this category: the organiser buys one pass and everyone in the group gets the premium features for the trip. If you're the person who always ends up organising, a two-week pass costs less than one subscription and covers everybody.
The closest thing here to a travel app rather than a splitting app: it's built around what a trip is costing you day by day against a budget, with splitting alongside. If your question is "are we overspending?" more than "who owes whom?", start here. The lifetime option means you can avoid the subscription.
Unlimited trips, expenses, members and receipts, with no caps, no ads, no subscription and no account beyond Sign in with Apple. The structural difference is that there is no TallyTrip server at all: trips sync through your own iCloud, receipt photos never leave the device that took them, and the developer has no technical way to read any of it.
The catch, plainly: Apple devices only — iPhone and iPad, plus Apple silicon Macs and Vision Pro. Sharing runs on iCloud, which is exactly what removes the accounts and the server — and it means one Android friend makes this the wrong app for your group. It has no web version, can't send payments, is English only, and only went live in August 2026, so it has barely any reviews yet. A one-time optional Pro unlock is planned later and can only add new capabilities — everything in TallyTrip 3.0 stays free permanently, and uncapped.
Worth keeping on the list rather than dismissing. It has the largest user base by far — your friends probably already have it — it runs everywhere, it handles ongoing roommate expenses as well as trips, and it's the only one here that can actually move money between people, with a wallet, a card and bank-transfer settlement in some countries. If in-app payment or a mixed-device group matters, the paywall may simply be worth it.
