Short version: if your whole group is on iPhone and you're splitting the costs of a trip, TallyTrip does it free with no limits. If anyone in your group is on Android, or you want to settle up with a payment inside the app, Splitwise is the better tool and you should use it.

Splitwise prices are taken from its App Store listing in the US in August 2026 and vary by region and over time — check the current listing before deciding. Where this page says "users report", that means it is a widely repeated user claim rather than a figure Splitwise publishes, and we've labelled it that way on purpose.
Splitwise has iPhone, Android and a web app. TallyTrip has neither Android nor web, and that isn't a roadmap gap we're being coy about — it's a direct consequence of the design. Sharing works through Apple's iCloud, which is what removes the need for accounts and servers, and the price of that is that everyone in a shared trip needs an Apple device. One Android friend is enough to make Splitwise the right answer.
Splitwise has built payment features into the product — a wallet, a card, and bank-transfer settlement in several European countries. TallyTrip records that a debt was settled; it never touches money, has no payment integration, and won't get one. If "settle up inside the app" matters to you, that's a real difference.
Splitwise has been the default in this category for over a decade. Getting six people to install something new before a trip is genuinely harder than using the thing four of them already have.
Ongoing roommate bills, long-running IOUs between friends, expenses that aren't attached to any trip — Splitwise covers all of it. TallyTrip is built around trips and doesn't try to be a general-purpose ledger.
The most common complaint about Splitwise's free tier is hitting the daily expense limit on exactly the day you have the most to enter — the first day of a holiday. TallyTrip has no cap of any kind, and adding one later would defeat the purpose of the app.
Splitwise Pro is sold per individual, though not always one per head — there is a two-person Duo plan, and an annual subscription includes a 30-day Trip Pass that extends Pro to a group. Either way somebody is paying a recurring bill to split dinner. TallyTrip charges nobody. A one-time optional Pro unlock is planned for a future version covering brand-new capabilities, but it will be a single purchase, only for the person who wants those tools, and it can only add things that don't exist yet — everything in TallyTrip 3.0 stays free permanently, and uncapped.
This is the part that can't be copied without a rewrite. TallyTrip has no backend. Your trips sync through your own iCloud account, the developer has no ability to read them, and receipt photos never leave the device that took them. It isn't a privacy policy promising restraint — there is simply nothing on our side to be careless with.
Record a dinner in euros on a trip budgeted in dollars, and the exchange rate is captured at the moment you spend. Rates move later; your old expenses don't. It works on a plane with no signal, and it costs nothing.
